With the very welcome recent announcement that its most recent owners, THQ Nordic, are remastering it, I thought I’d return to give them a few pointers of what needs fixing. And that does not include the troll rolling. The answer is: surprisingly little. KoA still just damned works. It’s still this utter peculiarity, a sort of solo MMO. It’s made as if all traces of the single-player RPG had been lost in an apocalypse, and had to be reverse engineered based on fossil records and World Of Warcraft....

Knights And Bikes (see our review for more) is the tale of two 1980s kids getting into adventures and mischief in the hunt for lost treasure. Nessa and Demelza whip around the Cornish island on bikes and have the best time. Bicycles give them freedom to go where they want, whenever they want. This is about the most relatable cycling experience in video games, a big puddle splash of joy and nostalgia....

As such, I am the consumer who is targeted by the Mass Effect Legendary Edition. All three spaceventure ME games in one remastered package? Sign me up! So far I’ve only played a bit of the first game, in its spiffy new 2021 get up, and all I can say is “Hooboy, this sure is some Mass Effect!”. That’s good, because Mass Effect is good. And it’s the only thing that really needs to be said, because it doesn’t really matter what any of the reviews say: you already know if you’re getting it or not....

It’s topdown hack-and-slash combat through procedural dungeons which consist of floating platforms you can move and rotate in order to bamboozle and best the demons you’re battling. The trailer does a good job of explaining the appeal. Yes, to this. I like the look of its hacking combat against swarms of inky black demons anyway, but the moments where the Tetris mechanic is used are the definite standouts. In the footage above, you see the player shift and rotate a platform in order to be able to slide through a narrow gap, and also to lure and then avoid a swarm of enemies the player doesn’t want to fight....

But let me tell you, you’ll have an urge to mark the time when you first fire it up, if only so you can check how long it takes for a character speaking in rhyme to turn up. It is an inevitability. You’ll have been clued in by the extremely “Tim Burton makes a video game!” look of the trailers and screenshots, but it’s hard to overstate how much Lost In Random does look like that....

It’s a gathering game, so almost the reverse of gardening, or perhaps the end point of it. But its relaxed pace, warm tone, and fun dialogue were, it turns out, exactly what I needed. There’s no pressure, and not too much to worry about. You can just wander about enjoying the vibe and digging things up with your gentle laser as you go.

The action-RPG foundations seem fairly straightfoward, doing that ARPG monster-mashing, so let’s check out a trailer from January on deckbuilding in Legends: So, cards represent the spells our wizard can cast and the critters they can summon. We have a deck of 12 cards and get access to a hand of four at a time, with new ones randomly drawn to replace ones we cast. And while we start with a preconstructed deck representing one of the five schools of Magic’s magic, we can pick up cards from other colours to build multicolour decks and outright swap colours....

If you’ve not heard much about Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition, it’s a remaster of the game focused on extreme graphical fidelity - and the first AAA game to require an ray tracing-capable graphics card to play, as it is entirely reliant on the technology for its lights and shadows. MEEE launches today at 4pm BST (that’s 8am PT, for the Western Hemispherians in the audience), and should be well worth a look as a graphical showcase....

Developers The Outsiders tweeted the news shortly before the game launched this week: “Coming soon to PC. Custom Music Modding support. Unleash Hell. To YOUR beat,” reads the tweet. Although I don’t love metal, I didn’t hate the music in Metal: Hellsinger by any stretch. It’s got a beat that had me tapping my foot, and it propels the action forward as you blast through hordes of demons. I’m extremely curious how music modding will work, though....

We heard at the start of the month about the massive performance boost coming in to land, with Asobo’s CEO Sebastian Wloch going from 35fps to 60fps over the busy skyline of Manhattan. This comes from improved CPU multi-core support, and optimised memory and GPU usage, which should reduce loading times and strip away most of the game’s stutters. I’m currently patching it in anticipation of a turbulence free sightseeing tour of London....

Some were announced for PC a while back (like Bright Memory: Infinite up ↑ there) but hey, good to see ’em again.

Howling Peaks was already given a bit of a showcase a few weeks back, with a demonstration of Mince Dungeon’s then-upcoming cross-platform multiplayer update. That feature arrived last week, but it’ll be a couple more ’til we take to the peaks in earnest. Biting cold not enough to put your party off a future in mountain-climbing, Howling Peaks offers a fresh roster of fiends well acclimatised to the thin air....

Whether you’re new to tabletop strategy or already like bashing miniatures together, the game makes for a perfectly enjoyable time. I just don’t know whether it goes beyond “perfectly enjoyable” into “thrilling”, though, and that may be down to its lack of, well, lots of things. Give it time and it may just evolve into a game of serious depth but right now it’s a bit too miniature to recommend wholeheartedly....

In fact, I never got further than I got back in July, when I wrote a post panicking about how it had been 165 days since I’d made my promise, but that I still hadn’t started playing. The end of the year felt forever away, then....

The self-described “updated version” was announced during NieR’s 10-year anniversary livestream, then later via the NieR Series twitter account. Replicant Long Number is a polished up re-release of NieR’s 2010 debut - specifically, Japan-exclusive PS3 version NieR: Replicant and not NieR: Gestalt, an international version for PS3 and Xbox 360 which traded the dapper young lead for a gruff middle-aged dad (affectionately, Papa Nier). Never mind that NieR itself is an obscure ending for Drakengard run amok - and man, we haven’t even touched on the live stage show....

And it’s not alone: DLSS 3 is being patched into several already-released games this month. These include FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch, which will be updated on November 7th, and Destroy All Humans! 2 – Reprobed, which gets DLSS 3 on the 15th. Shame there’s no patch for that punctuation tangle. Microsoft Flight Simulator is also officially adding DLSS 3 on the November 11th, though it’s already available to try in beta form....
