But Deadsuit, your android-like protagonist, makes for a slightly rusty-feeling companion at times, lacking the grace and elegance of Nintendo’s Samus Aran, and the nimble dexterity of Team Cherry’s nameless knight. It will tide you over until Silksong arrives, for sure, but it also never quite sings in the way you’d hope. From the off, it’s clear Ghost Song owes a great debt to Metroid and Hollow Knight. Deadsuit herself might be a smaller and less imposing presence than Nintendo’s fearsome bounty hunter, but her arm cannon and glowing visor feel like they could have been an old suit design that’s been saved from the recycling bin....

Admittedly, I’ve never played a Halo game (yeah, I know), but ODST is always the one my pals talk most highly of. Also, I was today years-old when I learned it might as well be a Firefly spin-off, seeing as it features the voice talents of Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk. It’s probably worth starting at the beginning. Which, for Humankind, is earlier even than Civ’s - rather than opening the game on the imminent foundation of your first city, it starts you in the neolithic, before cities or the agriculture that made them possible were even a thing. You begin with a bunch of nomads, who blunder around a world full of forests and mammoths and that, collecting dinners and knowledge of their surroundings until they’ve got enough stacked up in either category to settle down and start a civilisation....

All credit to Alice0 for the Bloodborne joke, but really the fifth season is called the Quietus. In Harvestella’s world the seasons are kept stable by four giant crystals (of course it’s crystals) called “Seaslight”, but problems begin to arise when the Quietus, a season during which crops die and townspeople refuse to leave their homes, begins and then mysteriously starts getting longer each year. You’ll solve that mystery by going into dungeons and bashing monsters to bits....

I’ve played thousands of games since then, and nothing quite like it. I couldn’t call it a game without flaws. The loading times were poor, some of the boss fights dragged terribly (those were later patched, to be fair), and between the writing and translation, a little effort was needed to get into the feel of things. But I dug its world, its general vibe, and even felt fondly towards some of its characters, particularly the griot and the protagonist’s mentor, who is way too busy being a badass somewhere else to babysit him....

My second thought came quickly after the first, when my cover was blown by a nearby Watcher that immediately reared back and emitted a shrill noise that alerted the Thunderjaw to my presence. “Oh shite. Here we go.” You know those far-too-good-looking gameplay trailers that big-name developers and publishers put out? The ones where everything looks so shiny that your PC would never be able to run it, and so exhilirating that it must have been scripted?...

Love Life is a standalone sequel to Kitty Powers’ Matchmaker. In the latter you had to run a dating agency and engineer successful blind dates. In this, you move on to the next stage, as it were, as new couples move in together in a village under your control. Couples make friends, go on dates together, and come to relationship therapy sessions with you. Your little blob-nosed friends are all procedurally generated, so they all have slightly different interests and traits....

During the top down shooter levels, you’ll need to master the art of darting across the screen. It’s a bit fiddly at first. Once you’ve got the timing down, if it was anything like my experience, it should become second nature to warp around. Just make sure you’re using a pad when playing, as it is a bit of a headache to try with a keyboard. Velocity 2X is otherwise a rather simple but fun shooter, where the focus is to get the highest score by collecting survivors, finishing levels quickly, and collecting every crystal, all without dying....

The new video has plenty of Shadow Warrior shooting and slashing but it also shows off that new grappling hook that Lo Wang will be sporting in the third game. You can use it to swing from marked points over obstacles. Looks like it can also pull enemies to you so you can do a bit of slice and dicing. At one point Lo Wang uses the grappling hook to collapse a platform an enemy’s on and dump ’em in the drink....

They talk about murdering kings like they’re choosing pizza toppings. On selecting a wife for their king, “She’s got good stats. She’s a sadist.” I could watch these guys play all day. They start with a plan to unite the whole of Spain under King Alfonso VI, who has superb intrigue stats and seems capable of convincing anyone to do anything....
