It does fulfil the “rhythm” part of of that brief, though, with a pulsing and tooth-jarring soundtrack by noise-rock musician Brian Gibson. And you can time your grinds and jumps and turns to the thumping beat under everything. But it’s very hard, and you are quite small. You’re a space beetle, streamlined and aerodynamic, and with an incredibly shiny shell that reflects the lightshows in the hellish void that you’re speeding through....

It’s an excellent strategy game, where you collect and manage a deck of cards which can be improved or destroyed in an instant. There’s that trademark risk-reward flavour employed by roguelikes at the core of Loot Rascals, addictive and infuriating in equal measure. Really though, these oh-so-clever mechanics are overshadowed by the art-style, which sits somewhere between Adventure Time and Katamari. The cutscenes are glorious, filled with oddball space adventurers and monsters in the throes of existential crises....

I’d dabbled in other space strategy games before Sins (Galactic Civilizations, Alpha Centauri), but Sins Of A Solar Empire utterly gripped me from its opening cutscene. Sins would continue to be my space RTS game of choice for nearly a decade, until the arrival of Stellaris finally made me ask whether it was time to move on. Nowadays, Sins Of A Solar Empire doesn’t really do too much that its competitors don’t also do....

At this point I can’t tell what the consensus is on Cyberpunk 2077 anymore. Is it the most disappointing game ever, a seven out of ten, or a gem with a few rough edges? These days, I’d strictly answer with the latter, because I’m in love with its world and characters. £25/$30 is a good price for such a big, beautiful game, too. There are a bunch of smaller games in the sale as well, including those that are frequently discounted like Hollow Knight....

But drab blocks of flats, that’s the stuff for me. Ubisoft built a colourful post-apocalyptic world for Far Cry 5, let people create their own spaces in it, and even stuffed the editor full of assets from several Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry games, and people are here making demolished flats....

It’s the future, see, and we’re playing an ex-military cyborg who finds herself being hunted by the state’s heavily-armed police. Thankfully, she has blood-fuelled implants which let her slip into slow-motion and run along walls too (a contendor for the best thing in video games, don’t you know?). And so off she goes, leaping, shooting, stabbing, and generally having what looks like a grand old time. Retro-styled shooters are hot these days but, perhaps surprisingly for someone endlessly rabbitting on about rocket jumping and Devil Daggers, I don’t play many of them....

Not exactly sure why, ‘cos I wasn’t really paying attention, but there’s this Yates geezer throwing a fancy party, which she wants to infiltrate so that a secret society can make her queen of the world. She’s welcome to try. But she hasn’t got three billion pounds, has she? I have. And I’m gonna use ’em to beat Diana at her own game, join this secret society myself, and become king of the world....

But then, about an hour ago, I saw the trailer for Star Wars: Squadrons, the space pilotry extravaganza that’s due to fall out of the big EA Games Bum on October 2nd, and my luck finally ran out. I went down like a chump, reduced to helium-hearted nostalgia by the same, idiot’s trick all the New Star Wars things get people with - moving pictures of spaceships I spent way too long daydreaming about as a ten year old....

Brothers is almost ten years-old, though. More exciting is that Cris Tales, last year’s beautiful RPG, is the next freebie in line. You can grab Brothers from the Epic store now, if you have a free Epic account. You can read John’s old Brothers review if you need a refresher of its charms. He called it “a compellingly beautiful game, yet remarkably dark.” Cris Tales, meanwhile, is an RPG developed in Colombia which hits the high notes of JRPGs “with gusto” according to Nic Reuben’s review....

As part of the Future Games Show and Gamescom 2021, Inkulinati has sketched out another demo for itself which you can snag over on Steam. Developers Yaza Games announced that the demo would be available as of last Thursday. They mentioned that it would be available for 24 hours but, hey, it’s still up at the moment. So have at it. I’d been keeping an eye on this one myself because I am absolutely not above laughing over a donkey playing a trumpet with its rear....

Unfortunately, the problem seems to be caused by Alder Lake’s most interesting new feature: the mix of Performance cores (P-cores) and smaller Efficiency cores (E-cores). In the affected games, Denuvo is mistaking the E-cores as being from a different system altogether, resulting in crashes and failures to load properly. Some games will work fine on Windows 11 but not Windows 10, and while some are reportedly affected across both operating systems....
