If “session-based PvE survival” doesn’t immediately spark recognition, don’t worry. It’s easy to get into, he says, and more chill than the threat of “session-based” suggests. The long and short is that you’ll want to get back to your drop ship in time every round rather than hanging about to survive in the same place forever....

A real vintage video game vibe there. Genre-wise, the official site from publishers Focus Home calls it an “action game” - which to me would suggest a third-person dealio. Its big update back in March, Escalation, bought thousands of players back, but where that was focused largely on organised groups of experienced players, Rogue Games’ Andy Sites declared that “our goal for The Shattered Warpgate was to improve the experience for a much broader audience”. Central to that goal is a series of campaign missions, and a host of smaller side quests that will reward more of PlanetSide’s many playstyles, even if all you’re interested in is driving around for a while....

Patch 1.15.0 alters Olmec so that during his second phase he’ll only throw bombs at you if you’re below him. While this might seem like it makes him easier, it actually put you at greater risk of being hit. The previous strategy for this fight was to ride on his head for ages because the explosioves couldn’t hit you. Graham tells me this was kinda boring, though, and this change means you actually have to engage with the fight more now....

Turns out, that’s a perfectly valid way to win a round of Squadrons. Now, it’s been a minute since I watched Return Of The Jedi. But there’s a bit near the end where, having been shot out of the sky, a rebel pilot careens his ship into the command centre of a city-sized Imperial ship, the impact itself sending the star destroyer crashing down into Death Star 2. Having seen this, Reddit poster _Aedric reckoned it seemed a good enough plan to emulate in Motive’s competitive dogfighter (cheers, Eurogamer)....

So, Suicide Squad. Ha-ha-hilariously best known for the Jared Leto movie, they’re a long-running and often-changing squad of villains who are press-ganged into helping the US government, with remote-detonated explosives implanted in their heads for motivation. Here they’re sent after the Justice League, DC’s leading hero team, who look to have been corrupted by some sort of comic book foolishness. The new game from Rocksteady Studios is an open-world shooter sorta thing, though details are a bit thin for now....

Previously, SGDQ had hoped to go ahead with its physical event in Bloomington, MN from August 16-23, 2020. With the continued concern over the pandemic, organisers say “we will move the event to online-only, broadcasting the event from our studio with participants performing speedruns from the safety of their homes.” The dates for SGDQ will remain the same. It’s just the venue that’s changing this time. In light of the change, SGDQ is reopening speedrunner submissions from June 6th - 17th, presumably to allow for those who wouldn’t have been able to attend in person an opportunity to participate in the now online version....
