Also in the update are new loot, refreshed cosmetics, an updated battle pass, and a mysterious addition to the endgame for player customisation....

If you’re not familiar with Dynasty Warriors, it’s a series of games by Koei Tecmo which are set during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. Rather than dry historical retellings though, they’re fantastic romps in which you choose a character and then beat up hundreds or thousands of men on vast battlefields. It’s obviously not uncommon for Asian movies to blend history and fantasy together, but it’s joyous to see Dynasty Warriors treated like the daft fun the games are....

Get the Elgato Wave:1 for £49.99 (was £89.99) I reviewed the Wave:1 when it came out in 2020, and I was really impressed by the quality that this diminutive USB mic was able to capture. The included stand is a little low, but the built-in pop filter and cardioid condenser mic combine to produce surprisingly clear and rich audio. The best feature here is called ‘ClipGuard’, and basically it makes it much harder to stuff up a recording....

Obviously, you don’t need a pair of 90-year-old headphones to enjoy playing Morse. A modern headset will do just as well. You also don’t technically need the telegraph machine either, as there’s an onscreen button interface you can click with your mouse. But let me tell you, pressing those morse code buttons in-game wasn’t half as immersive as tapping out the commands on a proper dedicated machine, and I wish there was some way Morse could give everyone that experience when it finally launches in full....

Up to now, I haven’t played The Sims 4. I just build stuff in it. My Sims game is a perpetual limbo. What hell must it be to exist there, where suddenly huge houses or weird one room experiments spring up but no one ever experiences life. But the new Eco Lifestyle pack, an expansion to allow your Sim to live lean and green, might actually get me to play again, because it looks like it will make it a much more interesting game to play....

It will be here that hardware makers unveil the precise line-up of new gaming monitors, laptops, SSDs and the like, and I’ll be covering all those announcements in detail next week. For now, though, here are the broad strokes of what’s coming up in hardware land for 2021, and man alive it looks pretty darn exciting....

It’s Forza Horizon 5! James: Forza Horizon 5 often feels like less of a nice game to play and more of a nice place to be. We all know of power fantasies but here we have something you could call a leisure fantasy, a drop-dead gorgeous sandbox where competition has equal billing with exploration, adventure and the simple joys of just bombing around for the sake of it. The weighty but arcade-leaning driving model makes this a perfectly viable and enjoyable way to spend time, and while it will inevitably put off those who want something more authentic and simlike… sometimes I just want to ramp off a cliff and admire the scenery, yknow?...

I’d probably also tip a hat to Warhammer 40K: Darktide, but Alice0 already nabbed it for her honourable mentions, and frankly there’s enough shootybang stuff here as it is. But, also: toilet build quality testing, pushing Nazis into cement pits, and more than a hint of 70s funk. Check ‘em out. Aperture Desk Job A most unexpected return to the deadpan mad science of Portal, Aperture Desk Job could easily have been constrained by its utilitarian purpose of acting as a Steam Deck controls tutorial....

This year’s Summer Game Fest had a strangely messianic tone. In reality, the Fest is a pretty simple marketing instrument, a two hour ad break, if you will. But from Geoff’s heart-deep thanks to all the companies without whom it could not have happened, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was a charity gig. I have nothing against Geoff Keighley. He seems to be a very hard-working, affable fellow, who merely wants to nurture his strange and ever-swelling son, Gamesummer....

The Metro System mod by “keanuWheeze” adds Night City Area Rapid Transit routes connecting 19 stations, snaking across the city. You can select a destination and hop on for a ride, admiring the city in first- or third-person views from your wee single train car. Sure it’s slower than a car and far slower than fast travel, but it’s nice. The mod also adds station platforms to wait for your train, and you can fiddle with the speed and waiting times in the options if you want....

Alas, I never got far enough in the demo to unlock the sky laser (or Astral Ray, as it’s called in-game), but you can see it in action in the video down below. And man alive, it sure looks like it will come in handy against the ever-swelling hordes coming to attack your town. It’s a surprisingly similar kind of rhythm to the recently released Tribes Of Midgard, just without the faff of having to gather resources yourself....
