Jay and I both took a liking to Weaving Tides over in Screenshot Saturday Sundays. It is quite a lovely thing to look at, too, both in its cuddly cloud-like sheep and Halloween quilting. The bulk of the demo lets you poke at Weaving Tides’ main adventure, which sees you and a dragon (your dad, apparently) set off across the land to help sew the neighbour’s farm back together. Trouble ensues, and you quickly find yourself off on a dang videogame adventure that sees you travelling the dangerous, knitted wilderness....

That sounds like a perfect time to peruse your gaming library and wonder what you could play. Look at all those games you haven’t got round to yet! Maybe 2023 should be the year you really commit to learning Dwarf Fortress, now the Steam version is out. Maybe this is the year you finally give an MMO a try or see your first JRPG to completion. Or maybe this year you’re going to uninstall your backlog in its entirety and just accept you’re only ever going to play Spelunky from now on....

Sex cutscenes I try to keep our research project on a path of joy and celebration but I’ll confess: I don’t get these. Every time a video game starts to show me a sex cutscene, horror washes over me and I need to turn away. Even between characters I care about, they are deeply, deeply unsexy. Just the worst. And yet, so many RPGs think I want to watch dead-eyed puppets smash their faces together and clip their fingers through each other’s skin....

Temporarily piloting an enemy It is always pleasing to defeat enemies using their own tools, from triggering their traps to throwing their grenades back. Perhaps most spectacular of all is defeating enemies by hopping atop a big lad and piloting him like a punch car to crush his pals. Video games were very into this murderous Ratatouille for a while. The latest God Of War had an archetypal piloting experience: weaken an ogre and you can hop atop its shoulders, controlling the beast’s movements and making it punch as you ride....

Even at a base level, DokeV is chaotic. Is it a kind of Pokémon clone? Monster Hunter? But also you cast spells? What… what do you actually do in DokeV? It’s being made by a studio called Pearl Abyss, the folks responsible for MMORPG Black Desert.
