Whenever I see a potentially good prebuilt gaming PC, I always put the parts into the fantastically useful PCPartPicker website to see how much it would cost me to make the same computer myself. The First Encounter is the first of the Serious Sammys from yonks back in 2001. It has yer guy Sam saving the world from aliens by going back in time to Egypt to kill the buggers last time they showed up on the planet. It’s Duke Nukem but silly with magic and aliens and guys with no heads and two bombs for hands. Classic FPS stuff. I’ve not played it myself, which is usually the point at which I share the wise opinions of some other RPS member but it looks like Alec Meer got distracted attempting to tell you about it....

So, AI squadmates. Basically like in Wildlands, with some tweaks. They’ll follow you around, you can order them to go places, hold position, or just start murdering. They’ll act in different ways depending on their weapon type. They’ll use gun turrets in vehicles if you want to pootle around blasting away. Y’know, squadmate stuff. Standard things that wouldn’t be remarkable if the game hadn’t weirdly launched without them. They do have some sensible behaviours to stop them screwing things up....

Likewise, Goat Simulator 3 is an expertly janky game about being a silly little goat and running around causing mischief. It’s a dumb, open-world simulator in which bugs have been promoted to features. Your goat is a horrible little kooky guy who mostly interacts with the environment through the medium of headbutts and licking. They’ll occasionally be catapulted into the sky by a spasmodic police car, or have their head irreversibly enlarged by a special machine, or bleat so hard at a beanstalk that it vanishes into thin air, but even during the most chaotic moments things feel entirely under control....

While this isn’t an exhaustive technical teardown, I can’t rightly tell where, if anywhere, the Steam release actually improves these notorious remasters. Within minutes, it’s clear they’re still largely the same glitchy messes of dull upscaled textures, lifeless lighting, malformed character models, and ropey animations that we all had a desperate chuckle at back in 2021. The main difference is that with Steam Deck support, they can waste your time outdoors as well....

GTFO is a pretty tough stealth FPS where you (and up to three pals) drop into an underground facility to gather data while fending off zombie-like monsters. It’s great fun, but it’s a difficult affair without a full squad to help you, so I’m looking forward to seeing how well these bots (who’ll take up player spots) perform. The game is continuing it’s “Rundown” update system, which basically means every few months GTFO replaces all its current levels with new ones, wiping your progress so you start fresh....

343 have kept a staggering pace in porting the old Halos, with a brief snapshot at Halo 3 and ODST running on PC coming before even Halo 2 Anniversary’s release earlier this month. So, while there’s no mention of the jazzy, Nathan Fillon-fronted spin-off in this week’s post, it’s not too shocking that there are already plans to roll out the trilogy’s closing act. Posting in a development update this week, 343 laid out their plans for Halo 3 flighting (testing) within the “first half” of June....

I had it on my Steam wishlist thanks to the always missed Brendan and his excellent review back in the summer of last year. It was always my intention to buy it when things quietened down, but just before Christmas, it was taken out of my hands when a friend gifted it to me. In this, the age of leaving things open in case the suits order a new series, it’s not often you get an ending where you think “Yes. Yes, I will be happy even if there are never any more Dishonored things.” Of course, it is also a very good game in its own right. Billie Lurk, even though she gets her own array of spooky assassin powers, just feels more practical than the previous protagonists....

In These Uncertain Times (™), though, I returned to DD, because I thought maybe some virtual dad dating can help me through the lonely hours where all I crave is a cuddle from a comforting, burly fella. But first, I gotta build my own Daddy. I’m unfortunately unable to give my character my septum piercing, and the hair that most closely resembles mine features a different-coloured streak in it, but check me out!...

If you’ve never played Ghostrunner, just imagine Mirror’s Edge crossed with Hotline Miami and you’re incredibly close already. It’s set in a dark, glitchy cyberpunk setting that never does more than it needs to: offer you a path from point A to point B, with many enemies to slice into kibble along the way. There’s really not much more that you need to know about Ghostrunner, and you probably already know whether or not you’d enjoy it....

A large part of that’s down to Ori’s new arsenal of weapons and power-ups. Actually, I tell a lie. There’s one spirit weapon in particular that’s just hands down the absolute best of the best, and that’s Ori’s whacking great hammer, Spirit Smash. Honestly, there’s simply no need for anything else when you’ve got the might and majesty of Ori’s hammer beneath your fingertips, and it’s probably one of the most satisfying game weapons to have ever existed....

If you’re up against a predominantly red enemy, then you must switch from your own red-hot summer bod for a cooler, winter-y blue, in order to deal damage. This ability really shines during Outland’s massive boss battles. These big bads fire both red and blue attacks your way, forcing you to shift between the two pigmentations as quick as you can. It’s manic, sure, but so satisfying when you pull it off....

For the longest time, zombies have been immensely boring enemies. They’ve infested all corners of films, TV, books, and games. Especially games. Some titles have switched things up, like the special zombie classes of Left 4 Dead, or The Last of Us having a mushroom parasite rather than a your run-of-the-mill secret virus. But these don’t change the fact that plain old zombies are still dull. They aren’t scary, just so many shambling bullet sponges....
