“For over 10 years, we’ve had a crazy dream. The idea that the tales told in some of our games would be connected to each other, a connected world of stories and events with shared characters and lore. Each game is a stand-alone experience, but each game is also a doorway into a larger universe with exciting opportunities for crossover events,” Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director said on Friday. “Slowly, patiently, behind the scenes, we’ve been planning and plotting to make this a reality. I’m absolutely thrilled to tell you that now, the time has come to take the first concrete step on this road, establishing the Remedy Connected Universe.” He goes on to reveal that they’re already “hard at work” on a game that takes place in this universe, which is a pretty exciting prospect. I live for a good connected fictional universe. Stories where the easter eggs are a little bit more than just obscure references, where a beloved character will simply arrive on the scene out of the blue because, well, his own story was taking place just down the road. That’s about all we know of this new game for now, though. A few months ago Remedy did reveal they were working on a couple of unannounced projects, though. One is named Vanguard and was said to be a “long-term service-based multiplayer experience”, while the other seemed a lot more secret. Presumably the new game in the Remedy Connected Universe (RCU?) is that secret one, but you never know, perhaps Vanguard will be connected to all these interdimensional happenings as well. Before we see any of that though, Control’s new DLC arrives in a couple of weeks. If you’ve yet to hear about it, it’s called AWE, and takes place in an abandoned sector of the Oldest House. AWE stands for Altered World Event, which are the things you’ll be investigating down in that spooky sector.
AWE will be available on the Epic Games Store when it releases on August 27th. It’ll probably be out on Steam, too, seeing as that’s the very same date Control’s Epic exclusivity ends. Oh, and if you fancy seeing a bit of AWE in advance, Remedy is streaming the first 15 minutes of it over on their Twitch channel on August 13th at 5pm BST (9am PDT).
